1st Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment

Decription taken from the site.

The First Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment was organized at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Sep 1, 1861, by His Excellency Governor Andrew G. Curtin, under the provisions of a special law authorizing the Governor to raise, arm and equip a force consisting of twelve regiments of infantry, one rifle, one artillery and one cavalry regiment. This was to be a State force under the control of the Governor, to be held in readiness to meet any emergencies that might arise from the events of the war.

Five companies were in Camp Curtin on July 21, 1861, and were sent to Washington after General McDowell's defeat at Bull Run with the rest of the Reserve Corps. Soon two additional companies joined them in Washington. They were under the command of Colonel Hastings.
