Women of the War Index

The story of Rosetta Wakeman is evident in the strength of character of one woman who dared to enlist as a soldier in the Civil War. She did her duty honorably, and expected and received no special treatment because of her sex. She volunteered to render her country her "last full measure of devotion," and ultimately cost Rosetta her life. For that, Private Wakemen, and women like her, deserve the same honor and respect that we give other veterans.
