| Varina was only seventeen when she met thirty-six year-old Jefferson Davis in 1844.The first encounter did make an impression on her. Varina Davis was well educated and strong willed. She and Jefferson had their differences over their fifty-four years of marriage, but they remained devoted to each other through several decades of remarkable hardship. |
