| Sally Louisa Tompkins was destined for a life of helping others. After moving to Richmond, she spent much of her time and fortune assisting causes she considered worthy. With the onset of civil war, she labored tirelessly on the behalf of the South's wounded soldiers, and for this she became the first and only woman to receive an officer's commission in the Confederate army. |
