This is a Christian holiday, where part of the Christian populace hold church services and are marked with a cross of ashes, and the mark is not removed until the end of day. In the past this ceremony signified repentance for the sinner. Ash Wednesday is celebrated forty days before the coming of the Resurrection (Easter) and is meant to remind the churchgoers that their lives are only temporary. In some churches, the ashes of palms make up the material with which the forehead marks will be made. Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent.
