    Bastille Day commemorates the French Revolution riot known as the "storming of the Bastille" which occurred in July 1789. The Bastille was a famous French prison, taken over by citizens who were angered by the workings of the French aristocracy and thought of themselves as patriots. In modern times, Bastille Day is celebrated in France by fireworks and merriment. Parades and militia reviews are also part of the commemmoration.
