On June 20, 1868, a proclamation signed by the Governor General asked all subjects throughout Canada to participate in the anniversary of the linking of the British North America provinces under the name of Canada on July 1st. This holiday was established by a statute in 1879, under the name "Dominion Day". It was not practiced yearly until 1958 as an annual observance. In 1967 when Queen Elizabeth II attended the celebrations as part of a centennial celebration. On October 27, 1982, July 1st it became known as "Canada Day".
