Chanukah, or Hanukkah, is a very important Jewish holiday also known as the Festival of Lights. Jewish tradition says that a miracle happened in ancient times. Pagans took over the Jewish temple and forced the Jews to adhere to their religious traditions. When a Jewish soldier named Maccabee went to the temple he saw the Syrians had destroyed many things, even desecrating the menorah Jews held dear. When they wished to light it, they realized they didn't have enough oil to do so. Miraculously, the oil lasted for much longer than seemed possible, and from that day on Hanukkah had its beginnings as a holy day. Hanukkah is celebrated for eight days.
