Cinco de Mayo

Holiday Index

Cinco de Mayo is Spanish for "Fifth of May." On May 05th, 1862, Mexican soldiers grew weary of waiting for the freedom they hoped separating from Spanish would give them. They attacked their newest invaders, the French, at the Mexican city of Puebla. French forces were ambushed and their attack destroyed, giving the Mexicans the freedom they desired. General Sheridan of the U.S. Army gave ammo and firearms to the Mexican army, strengthening the ties between America and its Hispanic neighbor.
