Columbus Day

Holiday Index

Columbus Day honors the date in October 1492 when one of Christopher Columbus's men sighted land. Many choose to read about the explorer and his contributions on this day, and gave thanks that soon America was discovered. The Spanish explorers who helped to found this country should be honored and remembered. October 12 was marked as a "Columbus Day" as early as 1792 by a society wishing to remember this great man's efforts. President Harrison, in the early 1890s, desired for Americans to think on Columbus Day as a more important holiday.
