Kwanzaa is a colorful, symbolic holiday that is celebrated by many African-American families. Each item used in the observance of Kwanzaa must be carefully chosen and lovingly cared for. To begin the celebration, a table is set with African material and each candle-holder is filled with a special candle. The candles have seperate, important meanings, such as hope, togetherness and responsibility. Each day a certain candle is lit, symbolizing one of these important values. The official colors of the holiday are red, green and black, and the home and table should be decorated in these special colors. Kwanzaa was begun by a doctor named Maulana Karenga.
