Although a "Mothering Day" was celebrated in England in the 17th century as a way for the poor to visit with their mothers, the holiday itself can be traced back to none other than Julia Ward Howe of "Battle Hymn of the Republic" fame. In 1872 she posed the idea of holding mother's day get-togethers. More decades passed and Ana Jarvis, a Pennsylvanian, succeeded in getting her church to recognize the date of her mother's death. After this, many people campaigned for a national mother's day on which all mothers could be celebrated.
