The holiday's celebration stretches back to pagan times; in the 600s, Druids gave one another gifts when the New Year arrived. New Year's has only been celebrated on January 1st since 1582; before that, the Julian calendar was in effect. Now many families make a holiday out of what watching the ball drop each New Year's Eve in Madison Square Gardens in New York City, and some people set off fireworks to celebrate.
