The Ruffed Grouse is the state game bird, as enacted by the general Assembly on
June 22, 1931 the same day its state tree was adopted. It is sometimes called the partridge, and is known for its plump body, feathered legs, and marbled reddish-brown color. This coloring makes it easy for the grouse to hide itself in the wild. The ruffed grouse is found in most of Pennsylvania's counties. It is one of the most popular game birds in the eastern United States. The Ruffed Grouse is found wherever there are even small amounts of broad leaved trees, especially poplars, birch, hop-hornbeam, and alders. |
