The Trilobite was a small water animal and was chosen as the official state fossil, as
enacted by the General Assembly on December 5, 1988. It is in the category
of jointed-legged animals related to crabs, lobsters, shrimp, spiders, and insects. Trilobites had a large head, large eyes, a hard outer skeleton, also an antennae and many arms for swimming, walking, or feeding. They were a common fossil in many of the early to middle Paleozoic rocks of central Pennsylvania. Trilobites were found on jewelry among the prehistoric inhabitants of 15,000 year old rock shelters of Europe. |
