On June 17, 1982, Pennsylvania adopted a symbol recognized by no other state a State Beautification and Conservation Plant. The honored plant is Penngift Crownvetch.

Penngift Crownvetch was first discovered in Pennsylvania in 1935 and was studied at Pennsylvania State University. The name Penngift honors Pennsylvania and a Mr. Gift, the name of the farmer whose farm it was discovered on.

The plant is valuable as food for livestock, ground cover for erosion control, soil insulation in corn production, and nitrogen feeding. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has planted it along roads throughout the state.

It is a spreading, long-lived, winter-hardy, drought tolerant plant with stems
that grow to a height of 2 to 3 feet.
