The restored United States Brig Niagara is the Flagship of Pennsylvania, as enacted
by the General Assembly on May 26, 1988. The Niagara was the flagship of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry when he was only twenty seven, and was instrumental in squashing the British at the Battle of Lake Erie, on September 10, 1813. It is docked at 164 E. Front Street, Erie, Pennsylvania . As an ambassador of Erie and the State of Pennsylvania, Niagara has visited many ports on the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Seaboard. The Niagara is a two-masted warship originally armed with eighteen carronades along with two long guns. On the berthing deck were sleeping quarters for the officers and crew. Also on the same deck were storerooms, a sail bin, and a wood stove. Compartments for the gun supplies were stored in the hold below deck. The Niagara has a few original 1813 timbers that were able to be recovered from the 1913 and 1933 restorations.
