In 1774 he was sent as a delegate to the Continental Congress, and made president. He was a commissioner of Indian affairs and was a member until 1770, when he resigned. South Carolina House of Representatives - 1802-1810 South Carolina Senate - 1810 US House of Representatives - 1815-1819 US Minister to Russia - 1820-1830 Leader of the Union Party of South Carolina and vice president of the Union Convention in 1833 Note: In 1776 he was prevented by ill health from returning to congress, where his place was filled by his eldest son, Arthur. He was a large and successful planter, owning about 50,000 acres and 800 slaves, and he was constant in his efforts to improve the agriculture and commerce of the colony. Henry Middleton held a number of high offices in colonial South Carolina. In the last years of his life he retired from politics residing at his estates, "The Oaks" and "Middleton Place." In February 1776 he resigned his political involvements in order to prepare his family and lands for what he believed was inevitable war. His valor in the War with the Cherokees during 1760-1761 earned him wide recognition throughout the colonies and demonstrated his cool leadership abilities while under pressure. He opposed independence and resigned. His son Arthur Middleton took his place. |
