Without doubt the most fascinating draw to Assateague Island is the legendary ponies. Legend offers many stories, a pirate shipwreck being them most intriguing. Although the origin of the Assateague ponies is not definitely known, their presence offers visitors a unique viewing experience for ocean vacationers. The island also sports a barren marshland appeal, with sand dunes, scrub brush, and no residential homes.
